Utkal Divas: A Legacy of Identity and Unity
Utkal Divas, or Odisha Day (April 1), marks the formation of Odisha as a separate state in 1936, breaking away from the Bengal Presidency. It was the first state in India formed on a linguistic basis, uniting Odia-speaking regions. This day symbolizes the resilience, cultural richness, and historic struggle of Odia people for identity and governance.
For Odias living away from the homeland, Utkal Divas is more than a historical event—it’s a reminder of their deep-rooted heritage. It reinforces their emotional and cultural bond with Odisha, no matter the distance. Prabasi Odias celebrate this day through literature, music, food, and traditions, keeping their identity alive while contributing globally. It’s a moment of pride, unity, and a reaffirmation of their roots.
