No, this is the same OSUK that has been serving the Odia diaspora for over 40 years. The only difference is that it has now been formally registered as a Community Interest Company (CIC) (Reg No: 15201747) to ensure greater transparency and accountability in its operations.
OSUK was initially founded by a group of doctors in the UK, and over the decades, it has been led by individuals from various walks of life. As the Odia community has grown significantly, the need for a more structured organisation became apparent. The founders, including past presidents and key supporters, are still very much aligned with the vision of a unified OSUK and are supportive of the current structure.
We are using the OSUK name and logo because we have officially registered the organisation, which has been operational for over 40 years. This registration is a crucial step to ensure transparency and accountability in all our activities. The OSUK name and logo have long represented our mission, values, and identity, so it is essential that we continue using them to uphold that legacy.
The OSUK name and logo have been deeply significant to the Odia diaspora for over 40 years, representing a strong cultural connection and a shared community identity. Given this rich history, there was no need to change the name. Instead, we focused on formalising the organisation by registering it as a Community Interest Company (CIC) in the UK. Retaining the name preserves the legacy, values, and unity that OSUK has proudly upheld for decades, ensuring that we continue to honour the past while evolving to meet future needs.
We decided to register OSUK now because we live in a digital age where the risk of misuse of names and logos is high. If we don’t take action, any organisation could potentially use the OSUK acronym and logo for unrelated purposes, which could lead to confusion and undermine the integrity of the work we’ve been doing for over 40 years. By registering the OSUK name and logo, we are safeguarding our brand, ensuring it remains exclusively linked to our mission and history. This step is essential to protect our legacy, maintain our reputation, and continue delivering the impact we’ve built over decades.
A CIC is a special type of company designed to benefit the community rather than private shareholders. By registering as a CIC, OSUK ensures that its primary focus remains on serving the Odia community in the UK, with built-in accountability measures such as financial transparency and legal compliance. This formal structure helps OSUK continue its mission more effectively and professionally.
As a registered organisation, OSUK will maintain a company account that is audited by certified chartered accountants. This ensures full accountability for all transactions, including donations, membership fees, sponsorships, and expenses. The balance sheet will be published as per legal requirements, minimising the risk of any financial irregularities.
As required by CIC regulations, OSUK has appointed a board of directors who are in the process of establishing the organisation’s constitution and regulatory framework. This framework will guide the appointment of office bearers responsible for the day-to-day operations of OSUK. Additionally, a core team is working alongside the directors to implement operational processes for the smooth functioning of the organisation.
Since OSUK is now a registered entity, it must first establish a constitutional framework and implement a transparent process for electing office bearers in accordance with the law. Once the regulatory framework is finalised, elections will be held to appoint office bearers. Until then, the directors and core committee will oversee the organisation’s operations.
By becoming a member of OSUK, you gain access to a vibrant community of individuals dedicated to promoting Odia culture in the UK. Members will receive exclusive invitations to cultural events, networking opportunities, and the chance to contribute to the community’s growth through various initiatives. Additionally, members will be able to participate in the election of office bearers and other decision-making processes as the organisation evolves.
For the first time, OSUK will celebrate Bali Jatra, Odisha’s maritime heritage festival, on 30th November 2024. The event will feature a delegation from the Government of Odisha, as well as members of the business community, who will join the Odia diaspora in the UK to celebrate this historic tradition. The event is being organised by OSUK’s Kent chapter.
There are many ways to get involved with OSUK, from becoming a member to volunteering at events or even contributing to various cultural initiatives. You can stay updated on opportunities by following the OSUK website and social media channels, or by contacting the core committee for more information on how to participate.
There is no “OSUK 1.0 & 2.0.” OSUK has simply been transformed and modernised, now operating with a formal legal structure to ensure accountability, transparency, and full compliance with the UK Financial Conduct Authority.
